Definition
Positions in this class are licensed as an Expanded Functions Dental Auxiliary and work under the supervision (as defined in WAC 246-817) of a dentist. Positions assist dentists in the treatment of patients and perform duties as outlined in WAC 246-817-525 and WAC 246-817-545.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Positions in this job classification work a majority of the time under general supervision of a dentist, whereas a Dental Assistant 1 works under close supervision of a dentist. Dental Assistant 2 places restorations into cavity prepared by dentist, and thereafter carves, contours and adjusts contacts and occlusion of that restoration.
Typical Work
Reviews post operation instructions with patients;
Inserts temporary filings in teeth;
Places and contours filling material, checks bite and makes needed adjustments to teeth;
Performs work of the Dental Assistant 1;
Performs other duties as required.

Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: Dental routine, terms, instruments, materials, and procedures; techniques of dental X ray; dental charting; types of sterilization and sterile techniques; record keeping.
Ability to: Operate dental X ray unit; perform expanded dental duties; develop, mount, and file films and plates; make impression for dentures and partial plates; polish and clean dentures; follow written and oral instructions; stand for long periods of time.

Requires current active Washington State Expanded Function Dental Auxiliary license.

Desirable Qualifications
Two years of experience as a dental assistant or equivalent education/experience.
