Definition
Performs journey-level work in at least two skilled trades areas constructing, remodeling, repairing, and maintaining of buildings, facilities, utilities, machinery, and equipment.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Under general supervision, performs construction, maintenance and repair work on facilities and equipment where construction activities constitute a significant portion of the working time. Construction includes erecting buildings and facilities such as greenhouses, screen houses, storage facilities, pump houses, animal waste handling facilities, barrier-free facilities, with complete mechanical and electrical systems. Conducts major remodels with space utilization changes involving lowering ceilings, removing and installing walls and installing all associated mechanical and electrical systems and fixtures.
In higher education, this class is distinguished from the Maintenance Mechanic class series by the requirement to perform work in at least two skilled trades areas in new construction at least thirty-five percent of the working time in an off-campus research and extension unit where access to campus skilled trades shops/employees is limited by significant geographical distances. Positions fabricate apparatus, facilities, or systems unique to research studies.

Typical Work
Performs work or leads and directs a crew engaged in construction and repair of buildings and other structures, roads, pathways, walks, fences, and related facilities in a State Park or other park facility;
Performs work or leads and directs a crew engaged in installation, maintenance, and repair of plumbing, electrical, steam, heating, domestic and irrigation water pump systems, sewage and other systems and equipment;
Inspects buildings, grounds equipment and fixtures to determine need for maintenance or repair;
Operates and maintains construction tools and equipment;
Performs work on marine docks, floats, piers, and related facilities;
Operates and maintains Class A and B equipment in the maintenance of all types of park facilities; welds, utilizing both arc and gas welders;
Acts as on-site project coordinator; heads, directs, and trains work crews and park staff in construction and maintenance projects and use of equipment;
Prepares reports; schedules maintenance; schedules equipment; assists in developing projects including determining materials, equipment, and manpower needs;
Transports materials and equipment to project locations;
Construct and remodel facilities in accordance with project requirements; assist in the preparation of engineering data;
Repair or alter buildings and other structures such as offices, laboratories, greenhouses, shops, sheds, barns, partitions, walk-in coolers, from plans, sketches or instruction; construct new facilities from blueprints and specifications;
Install, repair and maintain electrical, mechanical, and structural systems of buildings and utility distribution systems;
Construct forms, pour and finish concrete floors, walls, foundations, stairs, curbing, and sidewalks;
Inspect, troubleshoot, repair, rebuild, and maintain boilers, heating and ventilating systems, power distribution systems, refrigeration equipment and air conditioning systems;
Operate power tools and equipment such as welders, threading machines, lathes, sheet metal brakes and shears, pipe and conduit benders, saws, grinders, presses, spray guns and related equipment;
Fabricate, assemble, test, repair, and maintain apparatus, equipment and components from sheetmetal, steel, plexiglass, wood and related material for research applications and plant operations; estimate material needs and recommend purchases of commercially available components and equipment;
Fabricate apparatus, facilities, or systems unique to research studies such as animal waste or greenhouse research;
Prepare drawings and maintain documentation of construction and alteration projects;
Perform preventative maintenance and repair work on all types of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic equipment;
Operate motorized equipment such as cranes, backhoes, front-end loaders, trenchers, and related equipment incidental to the construction and remodel of facilities;
Assist journey-level workers in other trades areas;
May direct helpers;
Perform related duties as required.

Desirable Qualifications
Two years as a Maintenance Mechanic 1.
Completion of recognized apprenticeship as a journey-level worker.
Journey-level status in a construction and/or building trades or four (4) years of equivalent work experience. Vocational training up to two years will be substituted for the experience requirement.
