Definition

This is the supervisory level of the series. Positions at this level supervise journey-level workers performing skilled work in at least two skilled trades. These workers fabricate a variety of components using materials such as, wood, metal or concrete and/or construct, remodel, repair, and maintain buildings, facilities, utilities, machinery, and equipment. Incumbents supervise construction, repair and production activities and work crews within a region or at work sites in remote locations.

Typical Work

Schedules, directs, coordinates and supervises a region maintenance crew in the various phases of new construction and facility maintenance;

Supervises a crew engaged in construction and repair of buildings and other structures, roads, pathways, walks, fences and related facilities in state parks or other facilities;

Performs work in installation, maintenance, and repair of plumbing, electrical, steam, heating, domestic and irrigation water pump systems, sewage and other systems and equipment;

Monitors portable water distribution systems and wastewater systems;

Provides on-site inspection of buildings, grounds equipment and fixtures to determine need for maintenance or repair;

Operates and maintains or supervises maintenance of construction tools and equipment;

Operates and maintains Class A and B equipment in the maintenance of all types of facilities; welds, utilizing both arc and gas welders;

Acts as on-site project coordinator; heads, directs, and trains work crews and park staff in construction and maintenance projects;

Prepares reports; schedules maintenance; assists in developing projects including determining materials, equipment, and manpower needs;

Schedules the movement and use of equipment to and from project locations; transports materials and equipment to project locations;

Obtains bids and/or quotes and purchases materials;

Performs other related work as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in building and maintenance work; occupational hazards and safety precautions of building trades; supervisory methods.

Ability to: use hand and power tools; work from blueprint and sketches; estimate materials and costs; keep time and material records; plan and supervise work of others.

Legal Requirement(s)

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Desirable Qualifications

Two years of experience and completion of recognized apprenticeship in at least two skilled trades or four years of applicable work experience or vocational training.

OR

Two years experience as a Construction and Maintenance Project Lead.

Some positions require possession of a valid Washington State driver’s license.

Note: Positions engaged in supervision of the marine crew would require S.C.U.B.A. certification, two years of experience in the operation and navigation and/or piloting of marine vessels on waters governed by the U.S. Coast Guard. One year of training from a federally approved merchant marine school, naval academy may be substituted for one year operating experience, providing the curriculum included navigation, piloting and seamanship.
