FERRY OPERATOR ASSISTANT - TEAMSTERS

Definition
Under close supervision, assists higher-level crew in the operation and maintenance of marine vessels carrying vehicles, passengers and/or cargo.
Typical Work
Lowers the apron section of a vessel slip to the level of the vessel to permit embarkation and debarkation of vehicles and passengers; adjust the loading ramp system as necessary to accommodate various vehicle types and weights;
Directs traffic to the proper lanes on/off the vessel using visual and verbal signals; ensures that vehicles are parked so as to properly balance the vessel; blocks the wheels of vehicles parked on the vessel;
Secures the vessel upon docking; casts off lines upon embarking;
Keeps watch on passenger safety;
Keeps the vessel deck clean and free from debris, snow, and ice;
Assists in lubricating and servicing engines, running gear, and winches;
Assists in periodic inspections of engine room;
Becomes familiar with fire extinguishing and lifesaving procedures and assists accordingly in the case of such emergency;
Clears debris from the roadway and the shore adjacent to the landings;
Assists in vessel fueling operations;

Desirable Qualifications
High school graduation or possession of a GED certificate.
One year of paid work experience in a trades or mechanical occupation.
Equivalent education/experience.
