Class Series Concept

Positions in this series are responsible for the design, installation, testing, modification, deployment, and maintenance of statewide emergency and interoperable, Internet Protocol Land Mobile Radio wireless systems, wireless networking connectivity for communications systems, Intelligent Transportation Systems, wireless networking equipment and support systems. Positions perform work in accordance with Federal Communications Commission regulations, National, State, and local policy in one or more of the following categories.

Positions in this series are distinguished from other class series performing work on communications equipment by the responsibility for ensuring wireless connectivity and interoperable communications among multiple local and state agencies during vital operations and states of emergency. This would include day-to-day and emergency communications used by agencies to meet communications requirements. The work of this series goes beyond installation and minor repairs as positions in this series are responsible for the connectivity of the wireless equipment and components.

Definition

Performs basic, routine installation, maintenance, and repair of wireless Radio Frequency equipment, electronic and low voltage equipment, and internet protocol networking equipment.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Performs semi-skilled or sub-journey tasks such as repairs, preventative maintenance, and networking connectivity of wireless communications equipment and support systems.

Typical Work

Assists higher-level technicians in the operation, maintenance, installation, and repair of wireless communications Internet Protocol based Land Mobile Radio systems, microwave systems and support equipment;

Performs routine preventative maintenance of wireless communication systems to ensure ongoing operational connectivity;

Assists with programming software and configuration of wireless network connections and components;

Responds to reports of routine malfunctioning wireless equipment and troubleshoot, diagnose and make repairs;

Maintains records, fleet maps, and unique identification tables in databases and asset management systems. Maintains programming radio templates for the agency’s wireless communications systems ensuring each radio meets Federal, State, and regional requirements;

Works with higher level wireless technicians in the maintenance and repairs of mountaintop radio sites and off grid power systems, as well as installing antennas, feed lines, repeaters, and base stations in communications sites and on radio towers of up to 300 feet high, using safe procedures;

Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: operating and technical principles of microwave carrier systems, two way and land mobile radio systems, data systems, digital techniques, internet protocol networking, computer operations, and all electronic test equipment associated with the wireless communications industry.

Ability to: read and comprehend technical manuals and drawings; apply the electronic industry standards and procedures in effectively maintaining communications systems.

Legal Requirement(s)

There may be instances where positions must have additional licenses or certifications such as a valid General Radiotelephone Operator license issued by the Federal Communications Commission. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses and certifications are obtained for each position.

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Desirable Qualifications

High school diploma or a GED and education and/or training in electronics or IP networking.

AND

Experience in the installation, maintenance, and/or repair of at least one of the following: conventional or P25 wireless communications systems, microwave systems, or IP networking systems.

Equivalent education/experience.
