Definition

Performs skilled work in the installation, repairs, and maintenance of wireless Radio Frequency, electronic and low voltage, and internet protocol networking communications systems, connectivity, and equipment.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This is the journey level of the series. Under general supervision independently performs complex tasks in the installation, repairs, preventative maintenance, and networking connectivity.

Typical Work

Performs maintenance, and/or assists higher level positions in the creation of, Virtual Local Area Network within wireless communication systems; installs, configures, manages, maintains, and repairs wireless IP networking systems connected to the microwave network;

Performs maintenance, installations, repairs, and connectivity of complex wireless communications Internet Protocol based Land Mobile Radio systems, Microwave systems and support equipment;

Programs software and configures wireless network connections and components;
Ensures functionality of IP communications systems including P25 VHF, UHF, 700Mhz/800Mhz, voice, data, interoperable, and emergency communications consisting of P25 conventional or digital trunked communications equipment, routers and switches, communications dispatch console computers, interoperable gateways, communications switching equipment, and wireless systems servers including virtual machines, network manager and usage accounting systems;

Updates inventory records, performs maintenance, installation, repair, and programing of IP Based P25 and conventional, VHF, UHF, 700MHz/800Mhz digital trunked repeaters, base, and control stations, including the support systems as well as control and interconnect systems (fiber optic, multiplex and digital microwave) for use by the agency communications systems users;

Assures and determines equipment operates within the tolerances as set forth by the Federal Communications Commission rules and regulations;


Installs, configures, and maintains interoperability equipment providing interoperability with other State and local partners;

Maintains and repairs bi-directional amplifiers, distributed antenna systems and speed detection systems;

Performs preventative maintenance and repairs of mountaintop radio sites and off grid power systems;

Performs installation of wireless systems equipment at communications sites, in communications buildings, and may include radio towers of up to 300 feet high;

Provides end user training on the proper and safe operation of Land Mobile Radio subscriber equipment;

Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: operating and technical principles of conventional or P25 wireless communications systems, P25 mobile and portables, microwave systems, and/or IP networking systems; use of electronic and IP testing equipment associated with the wireless communications.

Ability to: read and comprehend technical manuals and drawings; apply industry standards and procedures to effectively maintain, repair, and operate wireless communications systems.

Legal Requirement(s)

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification such as a valid General Radiotelephone Operator License issued by the FCC. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Desirable Qualifications

Two years of experience as a Wireless Technician 1 or completion of equivalent, relevant formal education and/or training in electronics or IP networking.

AND

Four years’ experience in the installation, maintenance, repair, and/or programming or configuration of at least one of the following: conventional or P25 wireless communications systems, microwave systems, or IP networking systems.
