Definition

Serves as a senior-level Wireless Systems Technical specialist performing work that requires application of advanced technical knowledge of wireless communications systems and connectivity. May lead or train lower-level Wireless Systems Technicians.

Distinguishing Characteristics

As a senior technical specialist, applies advanced technical knowledge of wireless and electronic communications systems to resolve highly complex issues related to the maintenance, installation, and repairs and connectivity of wireless Radio Frequency systems, complex wireless communications Internet Protocol based Land Mobile Radio systems, Microwave systems and support equipment.

As a designated lead, assigns, checks and corrects the work of lower-level wireless systems technicians.

Typical Work

Operates, maintains, installs and repairs highly complex wireless communications Internet Protocol based Land Mobile Radio systems, Microwave systems and support equipment;

Supports wireless communications networking systems and ensures emergency interoperable communications;

Creates and maintains Virtual Local Area Networks within wireless communication systems; installs, configures, manages, maintains, and repairs wireless IP networking systems connected to the microwave network;

Performs emergency repairs and leads or directs other technicians in repairs;

Leads or directs maintenance, installation, programming, and deployment of complex and highly complex IP communications systems including P25 VHF, UHF, 700Mhz/800Mhz, voice, data, interoperable, and emergency communications, consisting of P25 conventional or digital trunked communications equipment, routers and switches, communications dispatch console computers, interoperable gateways, communications switching equipment, wireless systems servers including virtual machines, network manager and usage accounting systems;

Manages, and maintains a live inventory of coordinated IP lists and network programming parameters for equipment installed on a Wireless Information Technology Systems network;

Develops and provides interoperability solutions and equipment, providing interoperability with other State and local partners;

Mentors or trains other wireless technicians. Develops and delivers training to agency users on the operations of mobile radios, portable radios, and console systems;

Performs, or leads performance of, maintenance and repairs of bi-directional amplifiers, distributed antenna systems and speed detection systems;

Coordinates with wireless systems designer or project manager in the installation and commissioning of wireless IP communications systems;

Reviews plans and provides recommendations in the engineering, design, staging, installation, configuration, and commissioning of mountaintop radio sites and off grid power systems; including power generating equipment such as diesel or propane generators interfaced with solar or other power systems, battery systems, and generator/solar control systems;

Maintains and repairs mountaintop radio sites and off grid power systems to ensure ongoing connectivity and interoperability;

Responds to service outages and restores wireless Emergency Communication Systems. Performs site hazardous assessments and monitors RF levels at tower sites per Federal, State, and local requirements;

Leads and/or directs the installation of highly complex wireless systems equipment and Direct Current power distribution at communications sites, in communications buildings, and may include on radio towers of up to 300 feet high;

Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: operating and technical principles of conventional or P25 wireless communications systems, P25 mobile and portables, microwave systems, and/or IP networking systems; use of electronic and IP testing equipment associated with wireless communications.

Ability to: lead and direct others; apply Federal Communications Commission and industry standards and procedures, read, and comprehend technical manuals and drawings; to effectively maintain, repair, and operate wireless communications systems.

Legal Requirement(s)

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification such as a valid General Radiotelephone Operator License issued by the FCC. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Desirable Qualifications

Two years of experience as a Wireless Communications System Technician 2 or completion of equivalent, relevant formal education and/or training in electronics or IP networking.

AND

One or more of the following:
• Five years of experience in maintenance and repair in at least two of the following: conventional or P25 wireless communications systems, microwave systems, or IP networking systems.
• Five years of experience in installation, maintenance, repair and programming of wireless communications mobile and portable radios.
• Five years of experience installing and maintaining shipboard internal and external communications systems.

Equivalent education/experience.
