CRIMINAL JUSTICE TRAINER 1
Class Series Concept
Within the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission, positions in this series provide training to criminal justice professionals both in the basic academies (Basic Law Enforcement, Basic Law Enforcement Equivalency, Corrections Officer, Corrections Officer Equivalency, Juvenile Corrections, and Juvenile Services) and in advanced training for incumbent officers in specialty areas of instruction as required by RCW 43.101 and WAC 139-03-250.
Positions within this criminal justice series supply instruction, demonstration, experience, and evaluation in the following areas to include but not limited to: defensive tactics, use of force, de-escalation, less lethal tools, and firearms training. Facilitate instruction and training in preventing and discovering crime, conduct enforcement of Federal, State, and Local laws and regulations. Responds and answers calls and complaints of traffic accidents, domestic situations, robberies, and other misdemeanor and felony crimes, while employing necessary and reasonable law enforcement action. Instruct criminal justice professionals on identifying, reporting, and acting on conditions conducive to crime and danger. Educate students on conducting investigations at crime scenes and accidents, gather evidence, find, interview, and question victims, suspects, and witnesses. Train on conducting enforcement, making arrests, and employing life safety actions as proper under the circumstances. Instruct on preparation of forms, reports, and documents necessary to file charges, as well as testifying in support of criminal cases.

Definition
Under direct supervision, assists with delivery of WSCJTC’s approved training curriculum to ensure effective, efficient, and ethical training to WSCJTC students (recruit law enforcement and corrections officers, certified officers, 911 dispatchers, etc.) in various disciplines required by curriculum course work. Supports facilitation and delivery of classroom, scenario-based, practical skill development, mock scenes, patrol tactics, and firearms skills under the supervision and mentoring of higher-level criminal justice trainers. Supports recruit skill development through deliberate practice, enhances the trainer to student 1-5 ratio for effective engagement, personalization, and a supportive learning environment to train students to acceptable levels.
Typical Work
Utilizes supplied curriculum and instructions to facilitate proper skills, methods, and technique improvements to develop and enhance recruit and incumbent officers’ ability in various subjects to include but not limited to falling and recovery, grappling, defensive tactics, body placement and holds, handcuffing, firearms skills, less lethal tools, and de-escalation methods;
Assists higher-level trainers in assessing and recommending training based upon individual recruit or incumbent officer experience, body type, skill level, learning style, etc.;
Facilitates small groups or in one-on-one situations with recruits and incumbent officers to provide deliberate practice, supportive, or remedial training to assist with retention of approved curriculum, instruction, skills, or techniques;
Prepares the training environment ensuring the necessary equipment, tools, and learning materials are available and set up for a successful and efficient learning environment for recruits and incumbent officers;
Assists higher-level criminal justice trainers in ensuring a safe training environment where safety protocols are followed. Reports any safety concerns to higher-level criminal justice trainers. Reports injuries to higher-level criminal justice trainers and begins the documentation process;
Monitors and assists with recruit testing on applied skills and psychomotor skills;
Rates, grades and reports on student performance during training and/or testing;
Within a controlled training environment and in accordance with curriculum, performs, observes, and supports actors and roll players in scenario-based training. Utilizes simulated weapons, threatening gestures, physical tactics, or language to provide students the opportunity to employ the training received related to criminal law, de-escalation, and proper tactics;
Attends meetings and training on agency curriculum and techniques as it changes and to keep abreast of Industry better practices and recommendations, as directed;
Performs other duties as required.

Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: adult teaching and learning methods; physical and tactical training areas: martial arts, firearms, self-defense, military combative courses, advanced and specialty training such as crisis intervention, special investigations, etc.
Ability to: participate, demonstrate, and instruct others in a group and one-on-one setting; instruct, perform, and demonstrate hands on defensive tactics and techniques with a high level of skill; perform a variety of manual tasks; operate self-defense equipment safely and with a high level of skill; work outdoors in all types of weather extremes; perform prolonged physical activity; wear uniform to standard, model the guardian philosophy and follow agency mission, vision, values, and goals.

Desirable Qualifications
Two years of experience in law enforcement or corrections in an assignment that may require the application of physical force.
Two years of experience as a trainer of criminal justice personnel (law enforcement, corrections, juvenile corrections) or military members specifically in the areas of firearms, integrated arrest tactics, or de-escalation tactics.
Three years of experience training, mentoring, and/or coaching others in physical or tactical training in areas such as: martial arts, firearms, self-defense, military combative courses, or similar.
Equivalent education/experience.
OR
Two years of experience as a trainer of criminal justice personnel (law enforcement, corrections, juvenile corrections) or military members specifically in the areas of firearms, integrated arrest tactics, or de-escalation tactics.
OR
Three years of experience training, mentoring, and/or coaching others in physical or tactical training in areas such as: martial arts, firearms, self-defense, military combative courses, or similar.
