Definition

Delivers instruction to criminal justice personnel to include classroom, scenario-based, practical skills, mock scenarios, patrol tactics, and verbal de-escalation, VIRTRA training simulation, control and defensive tactics, and firearms skills to include concepts surrounding proper methodology of psychomotor skills, integration of verbal skills, use of less lethal tools, etc. for criminal justice courses.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Under general supervision, delivers training classes of 30-36 students according to Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission’s approved training curriculum to ensure effective, efficient, and ethical training to WSCJTC students (recruit law enforcement and corrections officers, certified officers, 911 dispatchers, etc.) in various disciplines required by curriculum course work. Facilitates and delivers classroom, scenario-based, practical skill development, mock scenes, patrol tactics, and firearms skills under limited supervision of higher-level criminal justice trainers. Educates recruits and ensures knowledge and skill development through strong communication, deliberate practice, effective engagement, personalization, and supporting a learning environment which trains students to acceptable levels.

Typical Work

Instructs training classes of 30 – 36 students according to agency approved curriculum, guides, and materials;

This position is seen as the main trainer, stationed at the front of the room. Provides instruction to curriculum, breaking it down where necessary, and ensuring concepts are delivered well and consistently among classes;

Utilizes supplied curriculum and instructions to facilitate proper skills, methods, and technique improvements to develop and enhance recruit and incumbent officers’ ability in various subjects to include but not limited to control and defensive tactics, firearms skills, less lethal tools, patrol procedures, and de-escalation methods;

Advises lower-level criminal justice trainers on areas of the curriculum which they support;

Evaluates student performance. Proctors, grades, and reviews written assignments, practical exercises, mock scenarios, and tests;

Collaborates with other instructors on options for remedial training in various disciplines. Provides one-on-one instruction to students in remedial training, when necessary;

Administers the physical ability test portions for criminal justice basic academies;

Attends meetings and training on agency curriculum and techniques as it changes and to keep abreast of industry better practices and recommendations, as directed;

Maintains order and structure within the training atmosphere by demonstrating professionalism and requiring it of others;

Maintains and models a standard of safety in the training environment to prevent and reduce the risk of Injury;

Communicates internally regarding student performance;

Performs other duties as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: adult teaching and learning methods; physical and tactical training areas: martial arts, firearms, self-defense, military combative courses, advanced and specialty training such as crisis intervention, patrol procedures, special investigations, etc.

Ability to: instruct groups and one-on-one settings; instruct, demonstrate, and perform to the curriculum being taught, operate equipment associated with the curriculum safely and with a high level of skill; work in or outdoors in all types of weather, perform prolonged standing or physical activity; wear uniform to standard, model the guardian philosophy and perform work in accordance with the agency mission, vision, values, and goals as well as a service mindset.

Legal Requirement(s)

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certifications. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Desirable Qualifications

Three or more years of experience in law enforcement and/or corrections in an assignment that may require the application of physical force.

OR

Three or more years of experience as a trainer of criminal justice or military personnel (law enforcement, corrections, juvenile corrections) specifically in the areas of firearms, control and defensive tactics, de-escalation or patrol tactics.

OR

One year of experience as a WSCJTC Criminal Justice Trainer 1 and three years of experience training, mentoring, and/or coaching others in physical or tactical training areas such as: martial arts, firearms, self-defense, military combative courses, or similar.

May require physical ability to successfully complete Defensive Tactics Instructor Course.
