Definition

Serves as lead instructor on decision-making for students. Using agency curriculum and training philosophy teaches students in classroom, scenario-based, practical skills, mock scenarios, patrol tactics, and verbal de-escalation, VIRTRA training simulation, control and defensive tactics and firearms skills to include concepts surrounding proper methodology of psychomotor skills, integration of verbal skills, use of less lethal tools, etc. for criminal justice courses.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Under general direction, serves as a lead or supervisory instructor, training, mentoring, supporting, and evaluating Criminal Justice Trainers 1-2 and provides timely feedback to contract instructors.

Typical Work

Teaches decision-making to students using agency curriculum and training philosophy. Teaches students not only how tools work, but when to determine which to deploy;

Liaises with Curriculum Unit and provides technical analysis and changes to academy curriculum when needed;

Consults and coordinates with other Criminal Justice Trainers regarding coverage, learning objectives, and class status and performance;

Oversees student lesson plans for performance assessment and/or to create student specific remedial lesson plans;

Serves as a Primary or Secondary Teacher/Administrator/Counselor within the Basic Training Division;

Communicates regularly with internal trainers and external stakeholders regarding student performance;

Performs minor investigations into alleged student misconduct;

Ensures training by other instructors is delivered properly;

Administers program specific procedures and ensures implementation of new program activities;

Leads, mentors, trains, supports, and evaluates Criminal Justice Trainer 1s and 2s and provides candid and timely feedback to contract instructors;

Has procurement and purchase authority as delegated by management to maintain minimum standards of equipment and supplies;

May supervise lower-level staff;

May perform scheduling duties of contract trainers;

Performs other duties as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: criminal legal theory, adult teaching and learning methods, and criminal justice curriculum development methods; instructional methods of patrol tactics, control and defensive tactics, de-escalation, firearm skills, traffic enforcement, crisis intervention, patrol procedures, criminal investigations, or other law enforcement trainings; principles and philosophies of effective leadership.

Ability to: lead and instruct others in groups and one-on-one settings; instruct and perform to the curriculum being taught with a high level of skill; work in and outdoors in all types of weather extremes; perform prolonged standing or physical activity; communicate clearly, concisely, and well; build and maintain strong working relationships with colleagues and subordinates; meet or exceed supervisory expectations; wear uniform to standard, model the guardian philosophy and perform work in accordance with the agency mission, vision, values, and goals as well as a service mindset.

Legal Requirement(s)

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certifications. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Desirable Qualifications

Five or more years of experience in law enforcement and/or corrections.

OR

Five or more years of experience as a trainer of criminal justice or military personnel (law enforcement, corrections, juvenile corrections).

OR

Three years’ experience as a WSCJTC Criminal Justice Trainer 2

AND

Associate degree or higher in criminal justice, public administration, sociology, psychology, adult education, or similar degree plan; or equivalent years of experience in law enforcement and/or corrections.

AND

Two years of first level supervisor experience and knowledge of the principles of efficient supervision and management.

Equivalent education/experience.
