Definition

Performs entry level professional land surveyor work in office or field.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Positions work under the close or direct supervision of a higher-level land surveyor. Assignments are often general in nature such as global navigation survey system.

Typical Work

In the field, operates total station and GNSS on survey crew assigned tasks initially with overseen with supervision on highly detailed with required accuracy work, or under direction of a professional land surveyor on complex work;

In the office, under the direct supervision of a higher-level land surveyor, performs computer aided drafting and computation work; works up complex drafting jobs, using field notes, sketches, and information prepared by higher-level land surveyors;

Maintains land surveyor record files; indexes recorded and historic survey map information; searches database records for information for land surveyors; creates archival quality digital images of maps, plans and other documents using specialized scanning equipment;

Drafts preliminary planimetric, topographic, and other maps using field information furnished by field survey personnel;

Performs other related work as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of computer aided drafting and associated software; geometry, trigonometry and various surveying formulas; knowledge of survey map requirements and state survey laws and standards.

Ability to perform skilled mapping, drafting or computation work in the office and surveying instrument work in the field; supervise unskilled and semi-skilled technicians; travel frequently and for extended periods if in field position, or occasionally if in office position.

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Desirable Qualifications

Two years of experience performing land survey work, or equivalent or higher level involving land surveying techniques, experience should be comparable to a Engineering Aide 2.

Two years college level course work with major emphasis in land surveying may be substituted, year for year, for the required experience.
