Definition

As a member of a health care team, provide social work consultation/supervision in one or more of the following areas: client/patient care, research, and teaching.

Distinguishing Characteristics

With delegated authority, interviews and recommends selection of applicants, trains new employees, assigns and schedules work, acts upon leave requests, conducts annual performance evaluations and recommends disciplinary action.

Coordinates one or more of the following: clinical social work service delivery to a specific client/patient population; an educational program in social work; and part or all of a social work research project; Supervises any or all of the following: Social Work Resident and/or Social Work Assistant; Social Worker 1 and/or Social Worker 2; and other assigned staff.

Typical Work

Plans and implements department clinical programs;

Plans and/or implements research protocols, studies, and projects;

Assembles fiscal data for development of budget related to assigned program(s);

Evaluates research and clinical programs in areas of expertise;

Consults with social workers and other health care professionals (on hospital and community-wide basis) in areas of particular expertise;

Identifies educational needs; plans and implements formal and informal teaching of health care professionals, health sciences students and general community;

Performs the duties of Social Worker 2;

Performs related duties as required.

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Desirable Qualifications

A Master of Social Work Degree from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education AND four years of full-time professional social work experience

Two years of this experience must have been in a health care setting.
