Definition

Maintains the patient nutritional care system which includes writing menus in accordance to diet prescription and processing menus for meals.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Under general supervision, writes or checks patient menus; distributes, picks up, and tallies menus; prepares food production worksheets; maintains record of patient diet prescriptions.

Typical Work

Maintains current patient kardexes by processing diet prescriptions from nursing units; 

Writes and/or checks patient menus according to established food patterns, food tolerances, and preferences; checks patient trays for accuracy to the patient menus; 

Responds to verbal and written communications regarding patient nutritional care; 

Calculates nutrient intake with computer; 

Labels, delivers and picks up patient menus; 

Tallies patient menus and prepares food production worksheets; 

Distributes nutritional care information to patients; 

Determines and reports patient census to food production area; 

Maintains supply inventory; 

Acts as department receptionist; 

Performs the work of Dietary Unit Aides; 

Contacts on-call personnel for relief work; 

Prepares late trays for patients; 

Performs related duties as required.

Desirable Qualifications

High school graduation or GED

AND 

One year of experience as a Dietary Unit Aide in a health care facility

OR 

Equivalent education/experience.
