Definition

Drive refuse trucks and collect campus refuse and garbage.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Positions allocated to this class have as the principal duty the collection of campus garbage and refuse. This involves driving and operating packer or dump trucks with a capacity of at least 16 cubic yards.

Typical Work

Drives refuse truck picking up garbage, refuse, scrap, etc., from campus buildings and facilities and transports to area transfer station, dump site or incinerator;

Performs minor service on equipment such as changing tires, oil and lubrication, filling hydraulic tanks, washing and cleaning truck;

Checks waste hauled for dangerous or hazardous material; notifies proper personnel for disposal;

Picks up, sweeps or hoses down around incinerator, transfer site or pickup areas;

Performs related work as required.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Desirable Qualifications

Ability to read and write;

Possession of a valid State driver's license;

Physical ability to perform heavy outdoor work.
