Definition

Independently provides direct optical services including, but not limited to fitting, measuring, dispensing, and adjusting eyeglasses, contact lenses, and other optical devises as prescribed by an ophthalmologist or optometrist.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Prioritizes, distributes, instructs, and checks the work of up to two apprentices and provides feedback on employee performance to the Health Services Manager.  Acts as the manager of the Eye Institute’s retail services and is responsible for the oversight of customer service; cashiering; inventory; ordering eyeglass frames and contact lenses; and ensuring the accuracy and quality of optical devices dispensed and sold at the Eye Institute.

Typical Work

Interprets eyeglass and/or contact lens prescriptions written by an ophthalmologist or optometrist; 

Opens and closes the retail shop in accordance with Harborview Medical Center policies; 

Oversees the cashiering function, including balancing daily receipts and performing cashier duties; 

Provides assistance to customers on frame selection and fitting; 

Sends orders to off-site lab/vendor for fabrication of eyewear and contact lenses and ensures accuracy of returning orders;  

Instructs customers on eyeglass and contact lens care and use; 

Provides high level of customer service to scheduled and walk-in clients; 

Directs rotational/temporary retail shop staff including prioritizing, distributing, instructing, and checking the work of others, and provide feedback on employee performance; 

Schedules appointments for patients with the retail shop’s optometry physician; 

Performs other duties as required.

Legal Requirement(s)

Washington State Dispensing Optician License 

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification.  It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position. 

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Desirable Qualifications

Washington State Dispensing Optician License.
