Class Series Concept

Positions in this series perform a variety of assignments in general farming work which may include work on a farm, game farm, assisting in the care and management of livestock, operating creamery equipment, or operating a variety of light, medium, and heavy farm equipment.

Definition

This is the entry level of the series. Performs unskilled farm labor under close supervision and specific assignment.

Typical Work

Picks, washes, and sorts fruit and vegetables;

Lifts seedling plants and trees for transplanting;

Operates irrigation equipment as directed;

Plants seed and seedlings with seeding feeder on mechanical planter or by using handpowered planting machines;

Cleans poultry and livestock pens; fills poultry and livestock feeders;

Gathers eggs.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Desirable Qualifications

Must be at least 16 years of age.

New class consolidates 4540 Farmer Worker I, 90450 Farm Laborer, effective January 1, 2006.
Base range salary adjustment adopted 6/30/2017, effective 7/1/2017; 25 to 27.
Base range salary adjustment adopted 6/13/2019, effective 7/1/2019.
