Definition
This is the journey level of the series. Under general supervision, positions inspect and perform veterinary technical specialized work involved in a variety of animal health programs as directed by a veterinarian. Positions are responsible for assisting in the evaluation and implementation of new techniques and equipment, assessing the impact of new programs, operating procedures and requirements, or assisting with a variety of inspection functions associated with disease control or eradication.
Typical Work
Monitors and maintains quality control and safety standards;
Oversees records maintenance, routine equipment maintenance and ordering and maintenance of supplies;
Prepares, organizes and assists in animal surgery; administers anesthetics and injections;
Performs radiology procedures and processes films; cleans, adjusts and replaces parts of x-ray equipment;
Assists in explaining specific techniques to students and/or research personnel;
Assists and coordinates inspection and testing of livestock, poultry, and other avian species on ranches, farms, auctions, markets, etc., to detect animal diseases and parasites;
Assists with auditing records, collecting samples and completing testing;
Coordinates hold orders and quarantine orders granting approval of movements of disease-free, infected, or exposed livestock;
Assists staff and veterinarians with outreach, education, tabletop exercises, and other animal health projects or events;
Performs the duties of the lower levels in the series;
Performs other work as required.

Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: poultry and/or the livestock industry; livestock handling equipment; public livestock market operations; animal care; animal care tools, medicines, and techniques; quality control procedures; leadership skills; medical records.
Ability to: handle livestock and poultry in a safe manner; safety protocols; teach and model veterinary nursing care; instruct others on technical skills required; manage up to an American Society of Anesthesiologists 3 level case with minimal support; act as a patient advocate.

Desirable Qualifications
Associate degree from an accredited school of animal technology and one year experience in the animal, avian, or veterinary field.
OR
Registration, certification or licensure in an animal or veterinary technician field and two years’ experience in the animal, avian, or veterinary field.
OR
One year full-time experience as a Veterinary Specialist 1.
