RESEARCH TECHNOLOGIST SUPERVISOR
Definition
Supervise scientific research staff and coordinate the functions of a laboratory or similar unit performing investigative and research work in physical, chemical, biological, biochemical and/or biomedical sciences.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Under general direction, supervise staff, including professional research staff, performing investigative work in support of scientific research. Administer the activities of a research laboratory.
Typical Work
With delegated authority, interview and recommend selection of applicants, train new employees, assign and schedule work, act upon leave requests, conduct annual performance evaluations and recommend disciplinary action;
Develop plans for facility changes and equipment acquisition and utilization; design or review design of equipment and facilities;
Coordinate use of equipment and facilities by laboratory personnel;
Monitor laboratory procedures and assure compliance with Health and Safety regulations;
Ensure quality control within the laboratory;
Direct recordkeeping and data collection;
May monitor and assist with preparation of budgets;
May prepare cost analyses of equipment and procedures;
Perform duties of Research Technologist 3
Perform related duties as required.

Desirable Qualifications
A Bachelor's Degree in an appropriate related field of science or technology AND two years' experience in a field applicable to the assignment.
A Master's Degree may be substituted for one year of required experience. Experience at the professional-level may be substituted, year-for-year, for the degree.
The announcement of position vacancy (recruiting bulletin) may specify course work or experience within a specific discipline if determined necessary by the personnel officer. Training or experience within a specific discipline will be required to meet the unique requirements of individual positions.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
