Definition
Perform administrative and research duties in support of a nutrition research unit and supervise assigned staff.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Supervise assigned staff and provide technical and administrative support for a nutrition research unit. Develop cost estimates for food, equipment, and staff time needed to complete research protocols; ensure that expenditures for food and supplies remain within unit's budget, and provide for maintenance of equipment.
Typical Work
With delegated authority, interview and recommend selection of applicants, train new employees, assign and schedule work, act upon leave requests, conduct annual performance evaluations, and recommend disciplinary action;
Develop and implement policies regarding unit operation in areas such as food purchasing and preparation, and maintenance of research data;
Assist with study design and planning to efficiently coordinate research projects;
Assist with preparation of operating budget for unit and maintain quality and cost control of food, equipment, and supplies;
Perform duties of Research Dietitian I;
Perform related duties as required.

Desirable Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in dietetics or food and nutrition, completion of American Dietetic Association approved dietetic education program, and three years' experience in clinical dietetics, one of which is at level equivalent to Research Dietitian I, or a Master's degree and two years' experience in clinical dietetics, or equivalent.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
