Definition

Under direction of higher classified personnel, operate and maintain an atomic reactor and assist in construction, installation, maintenance, modification, and repair of associated electronic equipment and systems.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Positions in this class are distinguished by the requirement for possession of an Atomic Energy Commission reactor operator's license.

Typical Work

Inspect and operate an atomic or nuclear reactor;

Perform maintenance on electrical, electronic, and mechanical systems and install electrical, electronic, and mechanical equipment associated with the reactor;

Draw schematic diagrams of the electronic and electrical circuits and drawings of the mechanical equipment associated with the reactor;

Perform routine checks on the reactor involving testing and calibration of electronic circuits, testing of associated mechanical systems, and conduct of water quality tests;

Assist in development and preparation of safety rules and evaluation of changes and additions to procedures concerning operation of the reactor; prepare and maintain records associated with the reactor operation;

Participate in scheduling operation of the reactor;

Perform related duties as required.

Legal Requirement(s)

Must obtain a valid Atomic Energy Commission reactor operator's license within 6 months of appointment date.

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Desirable Qualifications

High school graduation or GED certificate and one year of experience/training in the operation of a nuclear reactor or equivalent facility.
