Definition

Leads assigned laboratory assistants in the performance of routine laboratory work to include the cleaning and care of laboratory glassware and materials in laboratory work areas.  Under supervision, performs simple laboratory tests. 

Distinguishing Characteristics

In addition to leading other laboratory staff, positions allocated to this class are distinguished by the requirement for routine and repetitive work in washing, sterilizing, preparation, sorting, and restoring of glassware and related laboratory materials and for cleaning and stocking the laboratory work areas; directs assigned laboratory helpers in performing similar duties; performs simple repetitive laboratory tests as required.

Typical Work

Leads and directs assigned laboratory helpers in performing work in the laboratory; 

Prepares culture media, compounds and reagents;  

Decontaminates, cleans, and sterilizes glassware and other materials; 

Recovers soiled or contaminated glassware or laboratory materials in the laboratory and transport to cleaning areas; cares for laboratory equipment by cleaning; prepare glassware and materials for storage; delivers glassware and materials to storage areas and stores as required; sterilizes and stocks lab materials; maintains cleanliness in the laboratory. 

Prepares various chemicals according to instructions and fills containers; 

Cares for animals by keeping cages clean and supplied with fresh bedding and keeping animals watered and fed; 

Orders supplies in accord with instructions; performs clerical duties as required; 

May perform simple, routine, and repetitive laboratory tests and procedures as directed; 

May care for experimental plants; 

Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:  elementary bacteriology and chemistry; routine laboratory procedures; arithmetic.   

Ability to:  use common laboratory equipment; follow oral and written instructions.

Desirable Qualifications

One year's experience as a Laboratory Assistant 1 

OR 

Equivalent education/experience.
