Definition

Perform complex biomedical electronics work designing, troubleshooting, repairing, maintaining, installing, constructing and testing analog and/or digital electronic equipment or apparatus used in the patient care, life support, and clinical laboratory areas of a health care facility.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Under general supervision, independently perform complex work as a senior-level biomedical technician. Work on highly specialized patient care or clinical laboratory equipment requiring special schooling such as troubleshooting and repairing infant volume ventilators, magnetic resonance imaging equipment, computerized tomography scanners, etc., or constructing computer-interfaced prototypes, microprocessor controlled devices or test instruments related to patient care and/or clinical laboratory equipment.

Typical Work

Troubleshoots, repairs, maintains and calibrates complex and specialized analog and/or electronic patient care, life support, and clinical laboratory equipment or apparatus such as adult and infant volume ventilators, mass spectrometers, diagnostic X-ray equipment, magnetic resonance imaging equipment, computerized tomography scanners, etc.;

Uses electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes, digital multimeters, function generators, electrosurgery, safety, and logic analyzers, and other specialized test equipment to troubleshoot equipment malfunctions to system, board, or component level; uses and/or creates computer-aided diagnostic software and/or digital logic devices to locate malfunction(s);

Performs mechanical, electro-mechanical, or electronic repair(s); performs electronic repairs to system, board, or component level; calibrates and/or tests for proper operation;

Constructs computer-interfaced prototypes, microprocessor controlled devices, or tests instruments related to patient care and clinical laboratory equipment or apparatus; generates block diagram(s), designs relevant circuits and circuit board layout(s), writes software to drive microprocessor(s), and selects components; builds using hand and power tools; tests, debugs, and modifies as necessary to ensure proper operation; prepares appropriate documentation such as parts layout(s), schematic(s), and calibration procedure(s);

Performs preventive maintenance on patient care and clinical laboratory equipment; tests, diagnoses, adjusts, and calibrates to local, state, and national electrical and fire safety codes;

Uses proper biohazard (e.g. AIDS and hepatitis) and radiation (e.g. X-ray and isotope) practices while performing duties including special hospital procedures in operating rooms, delivery rooms, immuno-suppressed patients, etc.;

Advises healthcare professionals and administrators on compliance of equipment with fire and safety codes and modify equipment to satisfy these requirements;

Develops inventory lists and orders, stocks and stores electronic components such as transistors, integrated circuits, resistors, capacitors, as well as manufacturer specific parts for patient care and/or clinical laboratory equipment such as circuit boards, module assemblies, etc.;

Confers with faculty, staff, clients, vendors, students, and/or supervisors in determining equipment problems or fulfilling service requests;

Evaluates medical equipment involved in unusual incidents and prepare reports and documentation;

May repair malfunctioning patient care life support equipment during emergent situations;

May direct the work of others;

May maintain a technical reference library and maintain database files for an equipment inventory;

May perform limited maintenance or repair on computers;

Performs related duties as required;

Desirable Qualifications

One year of experience as a Biomedical Electronics Technician 2

OR

Five years of experience as a biomedical electronics technician
