About the TRIP data
TRIP’s primary goal is to develop and maintain a data repository for public safety research which integrates data from six core areas – crash, vehicle, driver, roadway, citation and adjudications, and injury surveillance – with crash records providing the foundation for linking pre- and post-crash data.
Primary functions of program include: (1) developing performance measures for all core data systems for each of the six system attributes (accuracy, completeness, uniformity, timeliness, accessibility, and integration), and (2) creating a central linkage repository to be used for research studies of traffic incidents that may include collision records, health records, court records, licensing records, and state toxicology records. Linking records across administrative datasets allows researchers to examine crash factors and outcomes in light of the broader demographic and community characteristics of drivers, passengers, pedal cyclists, and pedestrians.
Current TRIP data sources
The table below describes the data sources that have been incorporated into the TRIP data repository.
| Data | Source | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Statewide Crash Data – collision location | Department of Transportation | Records of Washington state collision information provided on Police Traffic Collision reports, including location. |
| Driver license history and ignition interlock device (IID) | Department of Licensing | Driver license history and IID compliance (i.e., instrument to measure breath alcohol content (BAC) level). |
| Court Case filings – Judicial Information System | Administrative Office of the Courts | Statewide electronic court records database for all cases seen by courts in Washington state (excluding King County Superior courts as of 2019). |
| Driving under the influence (DUI) related toxicology results | Washington State Patrol | DUI related toxicology results. |
| Comprehensive Hospital Abstract Report System | Department of Health | Information on inpatient and observation patient community hospital stays in Washington state. |
| Rapid Health Information Network | Department of Health | DOH maintains real-time healthcare encounter data from all non-federal emergency department (ED) and critical access hospital facilities in Washington state. |
| Emergency Medical Services Information System | Department of Health | The state repository for emergency and non-emergency responses made by licensed emergency medical services in Washington. |
| Washington State Trauma Registry | Department of Health | The registry of patient information for individuals who sustain serious injuries and are treated in trauma designated Washington state hospitals, including individuals who were dead on arrival or transferred to another acute care facility. |
| Death Vital Records | Department of Health | Collection of death records that took place in Washington state. |
Since administrative data sources must be finalized before they become available to the TRIP program, the TRIP data repository cannot provide real time data. Refer to the Data Status Dashboard (coming soon) for the date of the most current available data.
