About the TRIP data
TRIP’s primary goal is to develop and maintain a data repository for public safety research which integrates data from six core areas – crash, vehicle, driver, roadway, citation and adjudications, and injury surveillance – with crash records providing the foundation for linking pre- and post-crash data.
Primary functions of program include: (1) developing performance measures for all core data systems for each of the six system attributes (accuracy, completeness, uniformity, timeliness, accessibility, and integration), and (2) creating a central linkage repository to be used for research studies of traffic incidents that may include collision records, health records, court records, licensing records, and state toxicology records. Linking records across administrative datasets, allows researchers to examine crash factors and outcomes in light of the broader demographic and community characteristics of drivers, passengers, pedal cyclists, and pedestrians.
Current TRIP data sources
The table below describes the data sources that have been incorporated into the TRIP data repository.

Since administrative data sources must be finalized before they become available to the TRIP program, the TRIP data repository cannot provide real time data. Refer to the Data Status Dashboard (coming soon) for the date of the most currrent available data.
Data handbook and dictionary
The Data Handbook describes the data available in the TRIP data repository, data governance procedures, and processes to assess and review data requests from both external and internal sources. See the TRIP Data Handbook and Dictionary.
Data governance manual
The Data Governance Manual describes the procedures and infrastructure in place to govern the TRIP data program and ensure quality data produce and promote effective data management. See the TRIP Data Governance Manual.
Data privacy and security manual
The TRIP is dedicated to protecting research populations and stakeholders and preventing the inappropriate disclosure of any personal or identifiable information. The Privacy and Security Manual describes procedures and infrastructure in place to maintain the privacy of the research population and secure this information from unauthorized disclosure.
