If you could be remembered for one thing what would that be? That I was seen as a role model for Latino women in leadership and for my work advocating for the rights of workers.

Who inspires you/Best advice you ever got? Every day I am inspired by my mother who learned English as a second language, became a successful small business owner and raised 4 successful children. She demonstrates that big dreams are possible with dedication and hard work. My mother always used to say to me “Tu  mentee es lo que te hace hermosa” (Your mind is what makes you beautiful).

We want to highlight the Latinos that are making a difference in Washington State. If you would like to nominate someone for Latino on the Move, email lln@ofm.wa.gov.

Resource: Alza Tu Voz (Raise Your Voice)

Alza Tu VozThe following content was developed by Herminia Esqueda (DSHS) to raise your voice when pubic speaking. You can view the flyer here.

1. Credibility - Write your Bio. Edit specifically for each event. Highlight the areas that make you an expert on the requested topic. Send an appropriate headshot. Know your audience. Speak their language. Speak at their level. How will the information serve them? It is about them, not about you.

2. Confidence - ¡Con Ganas! Be punctual. Start strong. Look Good. Stand Tall. Have a confident posture. You deserve to be there. You have something to say. Smile. Speak loud and proud. Capture your audience's attention with a story, a quote, or a question.

3. Composure - The better you know your topic and are passionate about your topic, the more
comfortable and confident you will feel. Go over all of the content in your head before the
presentation. Better yet, practice it in front of someone else, this helps get the jitters out so you
can be relaxed when you present. Drink water. Take a deep breath. Go.

4. Content - Do your research. Prepare. Prepare. Prepare. Own it. Outline the key points. Use the outline to create your content. When creating a Powerpoint, use images that convey your
message. Use minimal text. Use the outline during your presentation to keep you on point.
State your key points at the beginning, during, and summarize with them at the end.

5. Concise - Be concise. Less is more. Be aware of rambling, or going off on a tangent. If you get lost, return to the outline. Time out each section so you know if you are ahead or behind schedule. Be prepared for both scenarios.

6. Connect - Connect with your audience. Move around. Make eye contact. Project good energy. Smile. Stand Tall. Fluctuate your volume, pace, and rhythm. Be aware of what happens to your
voice and body language when you are nervous. Adjust accordingly.. Look above everyone's head. For Zoom, look at the screen.

Practice. Practice. Practice

Take every opportunity to practice raising your voice.

  • Facilitate meetings
  • Volunteer for presentations
  • Lead break-out sessions
  • Do presentations outside of work about any field of expertise, ex. cooking, dancing, music, etc.

We are not a monolith. We each have unique lived experiences and expertise. Alza tu voz, for the sake of the communities we serve. Pa'lante
