Census 2000 5-percent Public Use Microdata Sample data
SAS dataset for Washington
The Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS) file for Washington State Census 2000 data contain individual records of the characteristics for a 5 percent sample of people and housing units. The PUMS data are available for geographic units known as super-Public Use Microdata Areas (super-PUMAs) and Public Use Microdata Areas (PUMAs). Each super-PUMA contains a minimum population of 400,000 and each PUMA contains a minimum population threshold of 100,000.
The Census 2000 5 Percent PUMS data file will unzip three files:
- waprecs5.sas7bdat – person records
- wahrecs5.sas7bdat – household records
- wa5.sas7bvew – a view file for combining the person and the household records
A list of variables contained in the PUMS files is available.

Census 2000 migration Public Use Microdata Sample data
SAS dataset for Washington
In- and out-migration flow data and the characteristics of these migrants for states and sub-state areas can only be derived from the individual state 2000 Census Public Use Microdata Samples (PUMS). While in-migrants to any given state can be analyzed using that state’s file, analysis of out-migration requires analyzing data from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.
The records included in the file available here contain the long-form responses for people who lived within Washington State in either 1995 or 2000. Using these responses, data users can develop their own tabulations of the characteristics of these movers and compare the characteristics of people moving into an area with those who left the area. Similar tabulations of the individuals who did not move can be generated directly from the Census Bureau’s PUMS files.
The Census 2000 PUMS migration data file will unzip three files:
- migpumswa.sd7 – SAS data set with the records of people residing in Washington during either 1995 or 2000
- pmlabs.sas – value labels associated with each of the variables in the SAS data set
- puma1_areas.xls – total area and land area for each 1-percent Super-PUMA
Documentation for the PUMS migration file is available.
Census 2000 Summary File 3 data
Thematic data for the state, counties, places, tracts, and legislative districts
These data files are extracts of the most widely used items from Census 2000 Summary File 3 (SF3) data – social, economic and housing characteristics compiled from a sample of approximately 19 million housing units (about 1 in 6 households) that received the Census 2000 long-form questionnaire.
Single-topic data files are available for the following topics. Each file contains data at the state, county, and place level.
1. Data for states, counties, and cities
- Population and housing
- Living arrangements and parental employment
- Income categories by race
- Median income, per capita income
- Poverty
- Employment status
- Industry employment
- Occupational employment
- Educational attainment
2. Data for census tracts by county
3. Data for legislative districts
The sample data from Census 2000 Summary File 3 (SF3) are not available for legislative district boundaries from the Census Bureau. To create estimates of household income, education, labor force, and other characteristics by legislative district, OFM needed to allocate sample data to each district. This allocation is made based on the proportion of population (or housing) each census tract contributes to each legislative district area. If, for example, a census tract had 30% of its population living in legislative district A-and 70% of its population in district B-then 30% of the sample tabulations would be allocated to district A and 70% to district B. Those tracts and tract parts in each legislative district are then summed to make the legislative district total.
- Population, housing units, land area, water area, total area, and population density (Corrected 2000 Census counts)
- Population by age and ethnicity, housing by structure type, vacancy status, other
- Household income by race
